INTERNATIONAL RABBIT DAY® – 30 September 2023
“Rescue is my Favourite Breed”

Perk up your ears! Saturday 30 September is International Rabbit Day® and the theme this year is Rescue is my favourite breed.
“People generally agree that adopting from a shelter is the right thing to do,” says Cottontails’ Director Lulu James, “but when it comes to finding their new pet many search online or buy from a breeder or pet store, supporting a trade which puts profits before welfare. International Rabbit Day® aims to change this and is encouraging anyone thinking of acquiring companion rabbits to adopt, not shop.
Why Adoption Really is the Best Option
UK animal shelters take in over 67,000 rabbits a year and they’re increasingly difficult to rehome as potential adopters look for fashionable breeds popularised by social media, or worry they might have health or behavioural issues. “Rescue bunnies are often pedigree too,” says Lulu James, “as well as an adorable mix of characters and breeds. They’re already neutered, vaccinated, trained and socialised and the shelter will be familiar with their history and personality, so you get the best advice. If you already have a bunny, let her choose her new friend irrespective of looks or pedigree – most rescue centres will offer a neutral space where rabbits can meet and get to know each other.”
Let’s Champion Rescue Bunnies!
Rescue rabbits are the most rewarding choice for a pet. If someone is looking for an affectionate rabbit or a playful, energetic one, or maybe a mellow and quiet one, they will find their perfect match at a rescue centre. Any proud adopter will tell you their rescue rabbits are the best! So this International Rabbit Day®, let’s think rescue when it comes to finding a bunny to love and let’s celebrate the wonderful personalities and charming qualities of rescue rabbits everywhere.
