ORANGE

Version 1

12-page picture book for 2-5 year olds with illustration ideas and speech bubbles in italics.

Blurb for Back Cover

Max the bunny doesn’t drink water.

He thinks orange juice can make him into a superhero so he drinks lots and lots of it at breakfast, lunch, teatime, dinner and even bedtime! Until one day…

Pages 1-2

The first time Max had orange juice… [Speech bubbles, large lettering:] “WOW!” “Fantastic!”

Max is a bunny. He’s just woken up (eyes sleepy, ears floppy) and he’s having breakfast with his friend Chestnut (who’s wearing a t-shirt with his name on it).

When Max drinks a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, he suddenly “wakes up” – ears up, eyes open wide – and becomes very bouncy, to the puzzlement and amusement of his friend.

Max reads out the info on the orange juice bottle [speech bubbles:] “Full of vitamin C!”, “One of your 5 a day!”, [large lettering:] ”A SUPER DRINK!” This is where he gets the idea that orange juice can make him into a superhero, so he pictures himself wearing a superhero costume.

Pages 3-4

[Speech bubbles:] “Orange juice is SUPER!” “It wakes me up when I’m sleepy…” “…cools me down when I’m hot…”  [large lettering:] “…and makes me feel SUPER STRONG!”

From this point in the story Max wears an improvised superhero cape (e.g. a teatowel tied around his neck). He drinks a lot of orange juice and is super happy and helpful – at least he means well, but ends up not helping at all. For example he carries somebody’s shopping bags without asking first, but they’re heavy so he drops them and all the groceries fall out. Or he tramples on somebody’s flowerbed while “rescuing” them from a “thief”/the hosepipe when actually they were just playing/watering the garden, etc. But Max thinks he’s fantastic, thanks to his superdrink! His chocolate brown fur is becoming slightly orange.

Pages 5-6

Max only drank the best orange juice: freshly squeezed, with bits, and straight from the fridge. [Speech bubble, large lettering:] “This tastes delicious! I feel like a SUPERHERO!”

Max becomes an orange juice expert, his juice has to be the best with “No added water”, “Made with Florida oranges’, “Organic”, etc. His fur is a little more orange. He dreams of having superpowers, e.g. being super strong, fighting off baddies, etc.

Pages 7-8

He loved orange juice so much that he had it at breakfast…. lunchtime.… ….teatime… … dinnertime… …and bedtime! [Speech bubbles:] “More, please!” [Large lettering:] “Orange juice is scrumptious, now I’m READY FOR ACTION!”

Max’s fur is a little more orange.

Pages 9-10

His friend Chestnut said, “Water is nice too.” But Max said, [large lettering:] “Orange juice gives me SUPERPOWERS! I can run like a rocket, hop for miles and fly as high as the sky!” So he drank more and more orange juice until one day…

Max’s fur is a little more orange. His ears flap as he jumps up and down on a trampoline, but of course he can’t fly. He dreams of carrying out amazing feats, e.g. rescuing animals from danger, flying to the stars, etc. Chestnut patiently rolls his eyes.

Pages 11-12

Max turns into a bright orange (ginger) bunny! There’s nothing wrong about being ginger of course, so the ending shows what happens if you overdo something, without bringing Max to any harm.

But Max isn’t the only one who likes orange juice…

Max’s friend Butterfly flies towards the orange juice jug, but Max doesn’t see her.

Pages 9-10

Neighbourhood cat Meow has seen Butterfly and tries to grab her. She manages to escape but Meow chases her. Max is too busy dreaming superhero dreams to notice them.

Pages 13-14

When Butterfly thinks she’s safe she flies back and lands on the orange juice jug to take a sip. But Meow comes up from behind and startles her, so she falls into the juice. Butterfly is about to drown or be caught by Meow. Max is drinking orange juice and thinking about superheroes while all this is happening.

Pages 15-16

Chestnut leaps to the rescue by tipping over the orange juice jug. Butterfly is saved and Meow – covered in orange juice – beats a hasty retreat.

Pages 17-18

[Butterfly’s speech bubbles:] “Thank you, Chestnut!” “YOU’RE MY SUPERHERO!!!”

Max finally realises what happened. He looks sheepish as he’s let down his friend and lost his big chance to show he’s a hero.

Max shyly joins in and helps to dry Butterfly. He offers her his glass of orange juice. [Speech bubble:] “I’m sorry I didn’t help you.” “But you’re helping now,” said Chestnut, “we’re a team! And…

Pages 21-22

[Chestnut’s speech bubble:] “…I WANT TO BE A SUPERHERO TOO!!!”  Everybody laughs. Max is a bit taken aback but Chestnut takes his paw and leads him over the page…

Pages 23-24

Max and Chestnut look awesome in their superhero costumes – proper superhero capes and t-shirts with a lightning flash and their superhero names: “Max Bunny” and “Power Chestnut”.
